Freebyte Task Scheduler: Portable task scheduling

January 22, 2009
Freebyte Task Scheduler

Freebyte Task Scheduler is a free utility for Windows that lets you schedule daily, weekly, or one-off jobs for your PC. You can use it to run a backup utility every night at midnight, or start your streaming audio player when your favorite radio show is on. In other words, it does pretty much the same thing as the Windows Task Scheduler that's probably built into your operating system.

But there's one thing that sets FreeByte's utility apart from the Windows Task Scheduler. It's a portable app, which means you can download it and run it. No installation required. That means you can also throw the task scheduler on your USB flash drive and carry it with you from computer to computer. In fact, if you have the same programs installed in the same directories on multiple computers, I don't see why you wouldn't be able to use FreeByte Task Scheduler to run the same tasks on both machines.

I also find FreeByte Task Scheduler a bit easier to use than the Windows utility, but maybe that's just me.

Launch a list of programs from one shortcut with Utility Launcher

January 22, 2009
Utility Launcher

Utility Launcher is a free Windows application that lets you create an ordered list of Windows utilities to launch. If you have a couple of apps that you launch every day, but don't want to add them to the Windows startup routine and bog down your boot speed, Utility Launcher could come in handy.

Here's how it works. You download and unzip the application to any folder. Then click the menu button and start adding utilities to the list. Once you save the list, any time you click the Utility Launcher application you'll see the same list. Just click run to launch the first program in your list. Click run again and the second program will load. And so on. If you create a shortcut to the Utility Launcher.exe file and save it on your desktop or in your quick start menu, you can access your list anytime you need it with just one click.

When creating your list, you'll want to take care to put the programs in the order you want them to launch in. Rearranging the list is pretty tricky. You can delete items or delete the entire list, but you can't move an application from spot 3 to spot 1.

This message will self-destruct in five seconds

July 4, 2008

Imagine receiving an email and as soon as you’ve read it, the message burst into flames leaving no trace of its existence. Wouldn’t you like that same type of power? Well now you can, minus the whole burst into flame thing with Privnote.

Simply type in your message on the website and Privnote note will generate a link that you can send to your operative. The link can only be used once, so if your contact wasn’t able to retrieve the message you’ve got some security issues. But all is not loss since Privnote will display the IP address of the person that clicked the link…. traceroute anyone?

We doubt that you would actually want to send company sensitive information this way but we got to admit the whole “self destructing” message thing is pretty neat.

Noise of the white variety, right on the webernets

July 4, 2008

Have you ever been working somewhere and needed to focus on what you were doing, writing, saying, but there was too much ambient noise around you?

You know, peoples iPods crankin’ or chitter chatter chattin’.

SimplyNoise is about to become your best friend.

At desk jobs (ewwww), they sometimes pump in “White noise” to push out sound and give you a bit more privacy, but you can’t control how much of it you get.

SimplyNoise works kind of like an air conditioner in that you can amp it up to as much as you need. SimplyNoise’s site states that white noise can help get you in a zen state, give you more privacy while on the phone, help you fall asleep, and even ease migraines.

Since we’re all writers, and some of us have annoying construction going on outside of their condo during the day, we’ll put it to the test and you should too.

Let us know in the comments if white noise is the right noise for you.

Tell the World how you feel with TinySong

June 1, 2008

tinySong

Having an emotional moment but just can’t seem to express yourself with words? Well send a TinySong and tell the World how you feel with music instead.

TinySong is a nifty new application from the folks at GrooveShark that allows you to search for a track on the GrooveShark database, then gives you a short link that you can cut and paste into into an email, instant message or add to a blog entry if you want to funk it up.

TinySong is the latest project from the folks at GrooveShark who have recently been aggressively marketing their service with dirt cheap music download offers such as their Mothers Day 49 cent download offer. TinySong links in to GrooveShark’s’ marketing efforts as it not only allows users to share songs, but also allows the TinySong recipient to purchase the track they are sent if they are getting into the groove.

The service has only had a soft launch, so you’ll have to excuse any quirks, according to the good people at GrooveShark next steps include Twitter and Tumblr integration before a wider launch of the service.

ICONlook: icon search engine

May 27, 2008

When it comes to tracking down some icons for a project — nothing real fancy, and preferably under some kind of open license — image searching on Google doesn’t always do the trick. ICONLook is a search site that you can try instead: it’s specifically for icons, and it has some useful features that make it worth a peek if you’re in a pinch. These are generally OS-type icons, for stuff like apps, documents and search buttons, so don’t get your hopes up for anything too fanciful. Heck, we couldn’t even find anything as wild and crazy as a cat icon on ICONLook.

Selection is not ICONLook’s strong point. Even within the categories it’s designed for, there’s not a lot of variety. On the plus side, many of the icons are available in a number of different sizes, and there are links to the source and the license for each one. This puts to rest any worries that this might be some kind of hack job, or the work of nefarious icon pirates. Instead, what you get is a legitimate, middle of the road selection of licensed icons that will hopefully expand to become more useful.

Medison Celebrity – The $150 Linux laptop

May 21, 2008

Need a laptop, but don’t have a few hundred bucks lying around? If you could manage to scrape up $150, then you can have yourself a brand new fully-functional notebook.

Madison Celebrity

The Medison Celebrity is powered by an Intel Celeron M 370 which is clocked at 1.5GHz, 256MB of DDR2 (expandable to 1GB) a 40GB hard drive and a combo drive. You’ll also get 3 USB 2.0 ports, a PCMCIA card slot, Ethernet, 802.11g wireless.

One thing to note is that like all cheap PCs, it’s going to come with Linux. I’m pretty sure that for $150 you can learn to love Linux. However, I will admit that this deal does sound far too good to be true, so proceed with caution. There is a 4-6 week shipping time, so it’ll be a month at least before you know whether or not your $150 investment will bear fruit.
